🔥 IN PROGRESS!! 🔥 SKUNKWORKS PROJECT TO CONVERT XL-2 IOF-240B TO IO-240B

Post by XL2driver »

Hi folks,

Here's some positive news for XL-2 owners out there who have been thinking about what other engine you could drop into the XL-2 as a replacement for the FADEC engine - I can tell you that there is a 'skunk works project' in progress right now that has already replaced the IOF-240B engine with a standard magneto-powered IO-240B engine in an XL-2.

The aircraft has not flown yet and the project is under wraps for now until it's all completed, but I've spoken to the project manager today and I can tell you that overall they are encouraged by how relatively easy it has gone so far.

There was one modification required to the engine mount (relatively easily overcome once they figured it out), and there will obviously be some engine component items and instrumentation changes required, but other than those items, apparently the IO-240B engine dropped right in and the installation was not very difficult at all.

The aircraft will more than likely end up on the experimental category when it's done, pending discussions with the FAA.

I'll keep you updated as and when I hear more, cheers.

Per my IA it’s sad too. FADEC should be the 2020 standard. We shouldn’t be regressing 60 years.

Paul,

Though my mission has changed and I said "uncle" this year, when I decided to sell my XL-2 on, I thank you for continuing to champion these airplanes and this community. Though perhaps not quite as fuel efficient, I believe an XL-2 with conventional fuel management will be a better primary trainer, given the workload associated with transition to the broader GA fleet.

I’d still like a Rotax up front I think, but very promising indeed

What about the issue that TCM has discontinued the IO240 engine entirely......at least that is what I have heard.
I guess you can still have the motor rebuilt at TBO.....

My understanding is that they did not want to build new stock FADEC IOF-240B engines for Discovery without a minimum order of 50. That said, they stock IO-240 engines; (no FADEC). Those engines are present in a substantial fleet of DA-20s and several experimental types. It's a fair guess that when they need an IOF-240B for an XL-2 at TBO, they can pull an overhauled IO-240 and add the FADEC components.

I have no "special insight" but this is what I have been told a couple of times in the last few years.

True the new Rotax 915 or 914 is/are Fadec controlled.I believe the issue with ours is the cost of these parts has gone too high for nothing whereas in the Automotive world they have embraced morden technology and made it cheaper.I do not understand why Aviation things remain so high as a result we will always be dominated by conventional technology especially the GA side.Look at the LSA side, they have affordable parts.GA world is killing. The big players are killing it.A WOT switch for our aircraft, how much is it?Such a micro switch.
