XL2 Speed Data Point

Post by N645XL »

OAT 25 degrees F
Altimeter 30.60
Altitude 2,500 msl
Wheel fairings installed

I never run the engine much past 2,650 but today I was getting 1,000 ft/min climb and figured I’d see what IAS I could achieve in level flight at the engine’s max legal RPM of 2,800 RPM.

When the airspeed steadied out and I trimmed for level flight the IAS was varying at 125/126 knots.

That’s about 10 knots faster than I normally get at my 2,600-2,650 normal cruise RPM.

Interesting.Did your fairings come with brackets or you had to improvise.I would like to dress mine as well.

Mine were factory installed.

I’ve hardly ever flown the plane without them except in the snowiest of winters and then mostly for short proficiency-maintenance flights. So I don’t have much intel on the difference they make wrt speed.

So you normally see 110-115 @ 2600/2650 with wheel spats?

I typically get about at 2500-2600 without spats and would normally expect to see 105-110kts IAS. It seems to vary a bit depending on the day. It’s been up to about 120 kts at 2750, so sounds like maybe 5-10 kts in the spats? I must say I have considered fitting a set of vans spats, but more for looks than performance.

Not unusual to get between 125 ,130 at 2800 rpm on a cool day.

I always file 115 knots IFR and keep the RPM as close to 2,650 as possible. So it sounds like the fairings/spats do provide a couple extra knots.
