Re: Video: 914 Turbo Rotax-Powered XL-2 (flying version) - 2008 Sebring Airshow

Thanks for the thread. I've posted on a few other threads about wanting to convert an XL from the Continental to a Rotax for the weight and fuel savings, but if it's too expensive for Discovery, it's way too expensive for me!

Re: Any XL2s For Sale?

Be patient, grasshopper :-)
They occasionally show up on aviation for sale web sites, such as Trade A Plane, Barnstormers, Aircraft Shopper Online, etc. You could even put a Want To Buy ad in those sites, too.

Re: RE: STATUS OF DISCOVERY AVIATION

I accidentally crashed my computer 2 weeks ago, and in the process of recovery, I started consolidating a bunch of my links, including to the Liberty/Discovery website. I discovered that none of my Discovery links works any more. Is there any more word on Discovery's fate? I've never been an owner, ...

Re: Rotax 915 iSc upgrade

Hi Brad, Thanks for the information. Its always good to get an owner's perspective. I test flew a Liberty XL years ago, but wasn't in a position to buy anything. However, even as a big guy - it was comfortable. My wife isn't miniature, and we can't pack light, so until there's a lighter(and I guess ...

Re: Rotax 915 iSc upgrade

Considering the XL was originally designed to use a Rotax 912 series engine, it shouldn't be too hard to get a field approval for a 912 iSc Sport conversion. I just need to be able to retain the Vanguard gross weight increase with the reduced engine power. The main differences would be take off dist...

Re: Rotax 915 iSc upgrade

Thanks for the trip report. The 912 iSc is approximately 25 lbs. lighter than the 914 iSc. If the gross weight upgrade is available with the 912 iSc, I'd be OK with that engine; it retails for about $6K less than the 915. The 915 iSc also has engine management, and so far, requires a constant speed ...

Re: Rotax 915 iSc upgrade

Did the Discovery factory visit happen? And, if so, did you find out anything about a Rotax powered Liberty/Discovery XL?

Thanks

Re: Rotax 915 iSc upgrade

Thanks. I've been in both the Europa XL and the Liberty XL. Well, sort of the Europa. My shoulder completely hung outside the fuselage when I sat in the seat. Never got the canopy closed, of course. The point is, the Europa has a lot smaller frontal area, so a lot less drag, so it can go faster on l...

Rotax 915 iSc upgrade

Just spit-balling here. The Liberty XL was originally designed to use a certified 100 HP Rotax 912, but because of industry reluctance, the Continental IO-240F was substituted for the Rotax, and about 100 lbs. useful load was lost. I guess it is still possible to retrofit a Rotax 912 back into the L...
